Mettur dam was built across the river Cauvery and boasts of a storage capacity of 93.5 tmc ft (thousand million cubic feet).
With the recent spate of rains in Kerala and Karnataka, the dam was receiving an inflow of about 2 lakh cusecs. Once the reservoir filled up, the dam was almost releasing its entire inflow to the lower riparian districts.
The dam / reservoir also powers hydro electric plants and generates about 250MW of power.
