Root bridges are an amazing tradition and invention of the Khasi people. These bridges are constructed not using brick, mortar and steel, but by binding the roots of two trees on both sides of a stream. The roots grow and entwine around each other for centuries, strengthening with time to such an extent that they are able to support movement of people across them.
The pictures shown here are of one such root bridge located near the Mawlynnong village, which has become world famous on its own merit.
